An absorbent article having a longitudinal direction, a longitudinal center line extending along said longitudinal direction, and a lateral direction, said absorbent article comprising a first body portion, a second body portion and a crotch portion located between said first body portion and said second body portion, at least one of said first body portion or said second body portion comprises at least one side panel, said at least one side panel comprising at least one multilayered portion, said at least one multilayered portion comprising at least a first layer and a second layer, said at least one multilayered portion comprising a first surface and a second surface, said at least one multilayered portion being obtained by folding said side panel, said first layer and said second layer of said at least one multilayered portion being connected to each other and at least part of said first surface of said at least one multilayered portion being provided with surface protrusions, said surface protrusions being integrally made of material of said first layer and said second layer of said at least one multilayered portion such that said surface protrusions are integrally connected to at least one of said first layer and said second layer, wherein said at least one multilayered portion is subjected to a softening and forming operation to simultaneously connect said first layer and said second layer of said at least one multilayered portion and to provide said at least one multilayered portion with said surface protrusions.
